The 20th annual Mayor’s Breakfast Fellowship is set for 6:30 a.m. Thursday at the Nani Mau Gardens. Sponsored by the Exchange Club of Hilo, the event honors those who serve and protect the community, including local government officials, first responders and troops.
The 20th annual Mayor’s Breakfast Fellowship is set for 6:30 a.m. Thursday at the Nani Mau Gardens. Sponsored by the Exchange Club of Hilo, the event honors those who serve and protect the community, including local government officials, first responders and troops.
In 1993, former Mayor Steven Yamashiro asked the Rev. Richard Uejo to get some religious leaders together to present the Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast for the community. Uejo recruited Father Scott Bush and the Rev. Tom Okano to work on the project. They found common ground on the importance of religious freedom, which became the premise for the Interfaith Dialogue Committee and the Mayor’s Breakfast Fellowship, which is the first Thursday in May, the National Day of Prayer.
The program will include a musical special, and guest speakers including Mayor Billy Kenoi and Phillip Jones of Hospice of Hilo. In honor of the 20th anniversary of the Mayor’s Breakfast Fellowship, participants will join in a garden walk culminating with Kenoi planting an ohia tree.
The public is invited to attend the Mayor’s Breakfast Fellowship. The cost is $15.
Those attending from Hilo are urged to travel on Railroad Avenue and turn right onto Makalika Street to Nani Mau Gardens to avoid the traffic coming in from Puna.
